The rise of Christianity in the Byzantine Empire marked the
end of the Olympians and all deities associated with the
powerful twelve. The gods, who have meddled with mortals
in cruel ways for their own entertainment, were finally trapped
in Limbo, where their powers were useless, by young scholars
with powerful magic. The incantations were kept well hidden
for centuries to come.

Though the great Olympians and their fellow deities were powerless
in Limbo, they were never completely helpless. The great mortals
of their time, including Achilles, Odysseus, Jason and Aeneas
lived on, though their bodies have died, through reincarnation.
These reincarnated mortals have no recollection of their gloriously
tragic past lives, but are attracted to elements of antiquity, particularly
their native tongues: Ancient Greek and Latin. Not only are they
attracted to the Classics, but they are also attracted by the power
of their gods.

A group of archaeology majors and Latin majors, all reincarnated
mortals themselves, had been given the task of cleaning and translating
old tablets found in the lower levels of NYU's Center for Ancient Studies.
After working diligently, the Latin majors finally drew up a translation, and
as they read the words, both in Latin and in English, they released a force
beyond their wildest imaginations. The tablets were stolen the night
they were put on display, along with the translations.

The Gods were released from Limbo and let back into the mortal realm,
where they have quickly assimilated and efficiently disguised themselves,
and they like it. They're still quite abusive of their powers, but hide
themselves well. Even better for them, their stories are now considered
lore and mythology. Slowly, they're creating chaos and tearing
civilization apart.
